The lawns around where my parents live appear, from a distance, to be abnormally vivid, lush, and well-maintained. Their secret, upon closer inspection, is that many of them consist of a dominant substrate of moss through which grass makes its feeble attempts to propagate. On the one hand, this means a lawn can never *really* grow out of control in the manner of a typical lawn, since it's the moss who's boss. On the other hand, the moss is so effective at retaining moisture between bouts of rainfall that the grass that manages to maintain its foothold never wants for water so long as the rainy season persists.
